This nine-day workshop is designed especially for creative and forward thinking individuals. The program will focus on exploring design opportunities in relation to a user-based design scenario, a scenario that will relate to a consumer electronics product. The aim of the program is to provide you with a practical insight into current best practices in consumer product design and will help you to develop new skills and enhance existing competences. The program will comprise of a series of seminars introducing you to new tools and issues. You will then experiment with these tools in a series of workshops that will support your user based design project. You will develop an understanding and knowledge of European design trends, how to analyse and translate research into design concepts and how to identify and develop ideas through the use of user-centred and ethnographic techniques within a product design project. You will also be required to explore specific locations within central London in order to complete the project. At the end of the program you will receive feedback and creative insights from the Central Saint Martins team and from an invited professional product designer.

Rob Thompson is a lecturer in materials and processes on the BA Product Design course at Central Saint Martins. He has been involved in development of a diverse range of consumer products including televisions, mobile phones, MP3 players and sports gear. New mobile technologies are a part of our everyday lives and are radically changing our daily routines on many levels. They are living demonstrations of the potential of digital and electronic media in supporting and shaping our social environment. As the complexity of the technologies evolve so do the expectations of the users. Products and services no longer have a purely role; consumers desire more emotive and subjective qualities that touch on more complex mental models. Powerful interactive electronic tools are emerging, often networked and with the option of playing with personal and public identities, permitting the users to access, manipulate and exchange information. “Whenever, wherever, whoever” paints the picture of telecommunication today and this is spreading fast into other contexts of contemporary living. Are we heading in the right direction? The course is focused on the design of innovative consumer electronic tools in the context of mobility (umpc, mobile phone, locative media etc.), considering both tangible qualities (physical manipulation, gestures, etc) and immaterial interactions with social networking and services. On this course you will investigate these key themes and create new designs for the future.

Claudio Moderini, interaction designer, is director of the Master Course in Interactive Design at Domus Academy. His main research interests range from the introduction of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the everyday environment, to its potentiality in supporting the qualities of the social relations, to the multisensorial aspects of new technologies, with a focus on interactive “mixed reality” environments. He was professor at the Faculty of Communication Science of the University of Siena and at the Faculty of Industrial Design of the Politecnico di Milano. He lectured at the Politecnico of Milano, Royal College of Art, University of Siena and Shie Chien University Tailpei.
